Train at Your Own Pace
Imago Relationship Therapy offers a practical, relationship-centred approach for therapists who want to work more effectively with couples.
The training pathway is divided into three parts, each of which can be booked and paid for separately. You can begin by learning the foundations of the Imago approach, continue into in-depth clinical skills training when you are ready, and later choose whether to work towards certification.
You do not need to commit to the full certification pathway from the outset.
- Imago Foundations
- Imago Clinical Skills
- Supervision & Certification
Each part builds on the previous one, providing a clear route from initial learning through to clinical supervision and certification.
Important for certification: To become certified, you must attend a Getting the Love You Want or Keeping the Love You Find workshop led by a Certified Couples Workshop Presenter®. This may be completed at any point during your training, although completing it early is strongly encouraged.

1. Imago Foundations
A two-day introduction to Imago Relationship Therapy
Imago Foundations is the starting point for therapists who want a practical introduction to Imago Relationship Therapy.
Over two days, you will learn the core principles of the Imago approach and begin practising the Imago Dialogue Process – the central structure used to help partners create safety, connection, empathy, and understanding.
This training combines theory with practical experience. You will explore how relationship history can influence present-day patterns between couples and learn tools that can begin to inform your work straight away.
In Imago Foundations, you will:
- Learn the basic principles and structure of Imago Relationship Therapy.
- Practise the core Imago Dialogue Process.
- Explore how Imago understands attraction, conflict, and recurring relationship patterns.
- Begin to recognise how early relationship experiences can shape adult intimate relationships.
- Gain practical tools to support safety, connection, and understanding between partners.
- Experience the Imago approach through teaching, demonstration, discussion, and practice.
Imago Foundations can be taken as a standalone training by therapists who want an introduction to the approach. It is also the first step for those who wish to continue towards certification.

2. Imago Clinical Skills
Ten days of in-depth clinical training, delivered in two parts
Imago Clinical Skills builds on Imago Foundations and develops the practical skills, clinical understanding, and confidence needed to use Imago Relationship Therapy effectively with couples.
The programme consists of 10 training days, delivered in two five-day blocks:
- Clinical Skills I – 5 days
- Clinical Skills II – 5 days
The two blocks are usually held two to three months apart. This gives you time to practise, reflect on, and integrate the learning from Clinical Skills I before returning for Clinical Skills II.
Through teaching, demonstration, personal reflection, peer practice, and clinical application, you will learn to work more deeply with the challenges couples bring to therapy. You will develop your ability to help couples move from blame, defensiveness, reactivity, and disconnection towards greater safety, empathy, understanding, and repair.
In Imago Clinical Skills, you will:
- Develop confidence in using Imago Dialogue in clinical sessions.
- Build practical skills for working with high conflict, reactivity, affairs, developmental wounding, and entrenched relationship patterns.
- Learn interventions that help couples identify, understand, and change recurring patterns of conflict.
- Explore the four key Imago perspectives on relationships, including attraction, conflict, and change.
- Strengthen your ability to maintain safety and connection when couples feel distressed or stuck.
- Deepen your understanding of your own family and relationship history and its influence on your clinical work.
- Consolidate your learning through regular skills practice with peers.
Completion of Imago Foundations is required before progressing to Clinical Skills.
Clinical Skills I and Clinical Skills II are booked together as one programme.

3. Supervision & Certification
Clinical supervision, feedback, and preparation for certification
Supervision & Certification is the final stage for therapists who have completed Imago Foundations and Imago Clinical Skills and wish to work towards certification as an Imago Relationship Therapist.
This stage includes a minimum six-month period of clinical consultation and supervision. During this time, you will receive support and feedback as you apply Imago Relationship Therapy in your clinical practice.
You will prepare and submit a recorded therapy session for review. The recording must demonstrate that your work meets the required certification standard.
During Supervision & Certification, you will:
- Receive clinical consultation and feedback on your work with couples.
- Strengthen your use of Imago Dialogue and Imago clinical interventions.
- Develop greater confidence in working with complex relationship dynamics.
- Receive guidance in preparing your final recorded session.
- Continue building your competence and effectiveness as an Imago therapist.
- Prepare to meet the formal requirements for certification.
On completion of the supervision requirements and approval of your final video submission, you may apply for certification as a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist.
Please note that completing the training and supervision process does not automatically guarantee certification. Certification is awarded only when all requirements have been met and the final submission has been approved.
